Samara - Astana: Building an Air Bridge

Kurumoch Airport and Air Astana, Kazakhstan's national carrier, have discussed issues regarding the opening of direct flights between Samara and the Republic of Kazakhstan.

During the meeting which took place on February 25, the representatives of the Airport and Air Astana discussed the potential for establishing direct flights between Samara and the Republic of Kazakhstan.

Air Astana is planning to launch these direct regular flights in summer 2011, after they have completed the study of passenger, mail and cargo traffic statistics of Kurumoch Airport. The Airline is expected to initially operate flights from Astana three times a week using the Fokker-50. It also leaves open the possibility of creating an air bridge connecting Samara to other cities of Kazakhstan.

There are clear cultural links between the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Samara region with many Kazakh nationals currently living in the city of Samara. Preliminary surveys have demonstrated that there is much demand here for flights to Astana, both as a final destination and as a city from which connecting flights to other Southeast Asian countries in the Air Astana network are available.

According to the Air Astana representative, they consider the Samara region as “one of their high priority destinations” in the Airline’s strategic business plan development and future network expansion.
