December Growth

Kurumoch International Airport has tabulated the results of its business activity for December 2009 and New Year holidays. The data reflect the continuation of a positive trend towards the recovery in passenger traffic for the Airport.

Overall number of passengers handled by the Airport in December 2009 amounts to 103,470, an increase of 16.2% over the same period last year.

The new figures demonstrate a considerable increase in passenger flow through Kurumoch Airport on international routes (both scheduled and charter). Last December, 25,052 passengers travelled from Samara to a number of destinations within Europe and Asia and back, an increase of 26.6% when compared to the corresponding month in 2008. Goa, Sharm el-Sheikh and Hurghada are still the most popular holiday destinations among air travellers flying from Samara. New scheduled flights between Samara and Sharjah operated by Air Arabia have become the most striking addition to the December figures. Also in great demand are UTair regular flights between Samara and Tel Aviv (two flights a week) as well as regular flights connecting Samara and Prague of Czech Airlines, whose passenger flow was up 13.7% In December 2009 as compared with the same month in 2008.

This positive trend in passenger figures also continues on some regular domestic flights. Last December passenger traffic on the route Samara – Moscow was up by 40% over the level recorded in the comparable prior year period. The number of passengers flying between Samara and Saint Petersburg, but also between Samara and Nizhny Novgorod has increased, too.

Together with the passenger traffic through Samara Airport, other figures increased last month. Here is a detailed background: in December 2009 cargo and mail volumes handled by the Airport increased to the tune of 9%, while maximum take-off weight (MTOW) factor was up by 4.3% when compared to December in 2008.

With this positive trend in passenger and cargo traffics, Kurumoch Airport expects these figures to be much higher in January 2010 as compared to the same period last year.

Within the first thirteen days of January 2010, the total number of passengers handled at Samara was up by 29% (including those travelling on international flights (+ 40%)) over the same period last year. Despite heavy snowfalls in the beginning of January, the Airport conducted business as usual keeping the aerodrome clear to minimize travel delays.

Such carriers as  “UTair”, “S7 Airlines”, “Aeroflot – Russian Airlines”, “Orenburg Airlines”, “Ural Airlines” showed the most considerable increase in the figures of December 2009. Kurumoch International Airport together with air carries is constantly striving to widen their route network as well as to increase the frequency of flights on the existing destinations.
